# ISO PTT/Radio-like Ret Comms

Hi long time listener first time caller here. Ive been messing around with rnphone over lora and I think its pretty nifty and great. As a HAM i've been thinking of an rnphone implementation that has channel and PTT functionality, has this been done? Just off the top of the head, I was thinking something about HMAC based talk groups loosely based in the style of double trunking radio systems. Is there an argument for forking rnphone and building on that, or is it more appropriate to start another new app implementing lxst? Would I be covering territory already covered?

I am working on an application called Partyline that is for group voice & audio over Reticulum with LXST. It supports low-latency VOIP style communications in addition to "push-to-talk" style rooms for slower links like LoRa and packet radio, that can all exist on the same server.

One of my dream applications of Reticulum would be PTT walkie talkies.

You could place a portable Rnode on either a tripod or vehicle on the top of a hill that relays PTT messages between people with handheld walkie talkies that didn't have line of sight with each other.

This is a situation that Reticulum is uniquely best suited for compared to other technologies.

Hello nyx!

For direct, real-time PTT communication, the LXST Telephony primitive already includes PTT functionality. Not all applications use it currently, but it is fully functional in Sideband; you can make half-duplex calls with any codec, all the way down to the lowest codec2 profiles of course, and use PTT comms. You can also dynamically switch calls between half-duplex (PTT) mode and full-duplex (normal telephony) while mid-call. It's not in the `rnphone` frontend yet, but would be pretty simple to add - I just haven't gotten around to it. By the way, you can also configure Sideband to auto-accept half-duplex calls from trusted contacts, so it can be used for hands-off direct calls, similar to a normal radio.

There's also the LXMF-based PTT functionality, but probably not exactly what you're looking for.

There will also be a primitive specifically designed to offer functionality similar to trunked radio systems, but with everything routable directly over Reticulum, as well as having direct public and private group over-the-air virtual channels.

And for room-style comms, the Partyline application that Zenith is working on is looking very promising. I know it's still a work in progress, but it's working very nicely already. Listened to a couple of hours of "Radio RNS Moscow" today without any issues :)

I was able to stream partyline last night over lora, works pretty well and is really fun, thanks for the code!
